FIRST

We are an active charter member of the Baltimore Area Alliance (BAA), offering assitance to other Baltimore area teams, such as Merganthaler High School and Homeland Security High School. As a part of our fundraising efforts, we have hosted successful outreach dinners with open invitiations for all BAA teams.

We founded and mentored the FLL team Return of the Weremuffins who earned the Team Spirit Award and placed within the top 16 teams competing their first year. They have since competed in their second year as team 2026.

Science and Math Academy Team 1980 exists today as our first daughter team. We feel that we have been successful expanding the mission of FIRST, serving as a catalyst for former members and mentors of our team to grow and develop their own team with greater opportunities to inspire others in the fields of Science and Technology.

Government

Most recently, we have submitted two documents for review by the local government, a draft proclamation that would declare March 16, 2007 FIRST Robotics Day in the state of Maryland, and s second draft legislatation that would recognize FIRST as a national program throughout the United States.

We are currently trying to contact New Hampshire teams to submit our draft legislation with their local representatives as a House Concurrent Resolution. The state where FIRST is headquartered and home to this past year's Championship Competition, New Hamshire delagates have a much greater chance for success in ratifying the proposal. We look forward to collaborating with these teams to increase awareness of FIRST Robotics and their interests in science and technology throughout the nation.

Community

We have been actively involved in our surrounding community through outreach eforts with Habitat for Humanity, the Charleston Retirement Community Center, our host high schools, and other venues.

In the Park School, we reach out to the local student body through numerous journalistic articles designed to inspire interest in science and technology. We offer opportunities to grow in and learn about technical fields in an otherwise liberal arts environment. Most recently, we have encouraged interest in our team through a school-wide competition for naming this year's competing robot.

Seeking to increase awareness of FIRST spanning across a wider age group, we visited the Charleston Retirement Center where local television stations broadcast the outreach event. A number of the student's were interviewed and clips of the 2006 robot in action were presented. Smaller community outreach includes involvement with Habitat for Humanity and participation in Rockwell Automation.
